okay, thoughts. i’m a fan of both and i like them for very different reasons and sure you have similarities there but that’s literature. literature—or, in fact, many other fields in life but mostly in literature or in the arts because their legacy is timelessness rather than “progress” in the “scientific” or “technological” sense—builds on what time has collected and elevated to the level of “standards”. that’s why we have archetypes, that’s why we have themes, that’s why some contemporary stories like harry potter, narnia, even lord of the rings, are so familiar and therefore so easily relatable because they were built upon the foundations of literature and story-telling from predecessors. in fact, if you’re gonna start comparing things and ripping off the newer one, you better start with mythologies and disparage everything that humanity has contributed to the arts following that. which is pretty much everything else. literature thrives on universality—it’s not imitation, not in the strictest sense, but building on the “literary canon” you already have because you can’t produce literature (which is, presumably, some representation of the human condition, and the human condition is affected by time and universality as well because of the whole interdependence of human beings and the collective mind of our species, etc etc, and i’m drawing this from my own conclusions/thoughts so don’t kill me with sticks on the physics of this) without being aware of the classics. in the same way that you can’t form an identity without knowing your history. lord of the rings and harry potter have similar elements, because literature has a pool that all authors dip their quills in before moving on and making that pool wider with their contributions.

Where the idea for Harry Potter actually came from, I really couldn’t tell you. I was traveling on a train between Manchester and London and it just popped into my head. I spent four hours thinking about what Hogwarts would be like – the most interesting train journey I’ve ever taken. By the time I got off at King’s Cross, many of the characters in the books had already been invented.
